About Oliver Wood
I have a varied background both in terms of education and occupational experience, which broaches both the arts and sciences but I have always been passionate about photography. For me the medium offers the perfect symbiosis of technical craft and artistic judgement, a combination of attributes that permeates much of my occupational experience in other fields including broadcast and studio sound operations and other activities in the media and arts industries.
I started to develop an interest in the creative and expressive aspects of photography long before the digital age and although I now work exclusively in the digital medium I have not forgotten the importance of the unique qualities of chemistry based photography and print making. Although the days of improvised dark rooms or the alchemical magic of developer and tactile qualities of paper based mediums may be a thing of the past at Oliver Wood photography their legacy lives on in the form of a very large collection of archive prints.
My way of seeing is more closely associated with the idea of photography as an expressive, highly personal and experimental art form rather than a medium for commercial illustration. My approach or technique is quite varied at times but for me a camera is always an extension of the perceptive gaze, a device that facilitates the communication of visual curiosity and intrigue.
