An historic local curiosity – Over Alderley, Cheshire
A moody ride over to Alderley Edge in October. A day of unremitting fog and rather pleasant for that. I do like how foggy conditions create a comforting sense of becalmed peace. I ride to Alderley Edge very often and usually take the Hocker Lane route but this time I went via the main road and headed over to the Wizard Tea Room, returning via Hocker Lane. The tea room is the only establishment now catering to the many visitors to the notable Alderley Edge sandstone escarpment landscape and ancient woodland. Sadly, the old Wizard Inn closed several years ago but it was a large and always busy establishment and one that I often used to frequent.
I took the pictures of the Black Greyhound Smithy, close to the Prestbury / Over Alderley boundary, on the return. This very attractive quirky building has always intrigued me. I believe it is at least grade 2 listed and at least dates back to the 18th century but it could be much older than that as the construction appears to be Tudor. Prestbury and surrounding area is notable for its high concentration of listed buildings from the Tudor era and these include several private residencies. The greyhound has been used by a number of artisan businesses over the years including a bespoke furniture maker.
