The Kings Head – Chestergate | Macclesfield

Remains of a partially demolished building

Remains of the Kings Head on Chestergate

The old Kings Head pub on Chestergate in Macclesfield was vacated and closed decades ago. It then slowly fell into a state of potentially dangerous dilapidation and had to be partially demolished to prevent the possibility of the building falling into the street.

For many years I remember this old pub being boarded up with a strange collection of court jester / playing card images filling the window spaces and doorway. These were not posters but paintings on chipboard. The building was sprouting some very mature shrubs (buddleia) and trees which probably didn’t help.

The old building has been in this state for several years now and I managed to get these shots back in 2020, nothing has changed here in 2025 although now the site is thoroughly fenced off and shrouded from the road. Plans have been mooted to have this site redeveloped with a new combined residential and retail space that was supposed to be in keeping with the surrounding architecture. We will have to see if this ever comes to fruition. Otherwise, it would be nice to turn it all into a planted space with some nice feature trees and places to sit.
